I want to gain muscle, fast! Should I use steroids?

Anabolic steroids are organic molecules with seventeen carbon atoms arranged into four rings. The other additional types of atoms attached to it determine what kind of steroid it is.  The male sex hormone testosterone, for example, is a steroid. At the most basic level all steroids have the four carbon rings. Anabolic steroids are variations of the male sex hormone, testosterone.

The type of steroids I will be focusing on, however, are synthetic anabolic steroids. These are the steroids used as a muscle maximizing steroid that stimulate bone and muscle growth and also produce male features like facial hair. Steroids work by changing the expression of our genes by entering our cells and binding to the antigen receptor and eventually attach to our DNA. In shot, this basically activates hundredsof genes to begin protein synthesis and therefore SLOW down protein breakdown in our body! Because there is a limit to how much testosterone our bodies can produce, body builders tend to illegally use anabolic steroids to boost their testosterone levels, which therefore produce MORE   muscle.

As I’m sure you’ve guessed, I am not in favor of  synthetic anabolic steroids at all. Using steroid in the injectable and tablet form are both harmful and can cause DIRECT and permanent effects on our liver, causing liver cancer (NSW Government- Health). There is also no known safe dosage of using anabolic steroids. On the contrary, there are actually some steroids that are prescribed by a doctor to help stimulate male puberty, arthritis, decrease body fat, treat fever and headaches. However, the type of anabolic steroids taken by the sporting community for increasing muscles can be 100 times higher than the medical dosage. There are many negative affects to using this — and from my research I would say more negative affects than positive ones.

In addition to liver cancer, some side affects include acne, high blood pressure, breast in men, blood clots, and more. There are also psychiatric affects that include such as manic aggression in men. Furthermore, even though some people try to limit the usage of anabolic steroids through cycling – taking doses for a period of time and then stopping; stacking – combining two or more different types of steroids; or pyramiding – slowly increasing the dose of frequency of use (NIDA), not much study has been done on the effects of anabolic steroid usage on the body over time, so the total effect on the body is still not completely known.
